Coastal Landscapes - Shaped by the Forces of Nature

At Ristinge Klint we encounter one of Denmark’s most striking geological formations. Here, we learn about the forces of the Ice Age and the layers that are clearly visible in the cliff. The tour continues south through a varied landscape featuring bird sanctuaries and flooded areas where nature has rapidly reclaimed the terrain.

Bagenkop and the Hat Hills

About Bagenkop we encounter the hat hills—distinctive glacial formations—and learn about Magleby Nor, which was previously drained, but where the desire to bring the water back remains. In Bagenkop, we stop at the harbor for a light lunch and time for a short walk among the charming houses and shops.

The tour continues to Keldsnor, where we look for wild horses and learn about the area’s rich bird and wildlife in the protected nature reserve.

Manor houses, forts, and visionary enthusiasts

On the way north, you’ll learn about Langelandsfort and Holmegaard Refugee Center — chapters in the island’s recent history. We pass Broløkke Manor and learn about the manor culture on Langeland, as well as the reason why the estates are located to the east and the smallholdings to the west.

Ellen Fuglede and Skovsgaard Estate

At Skovsgaard Manor , the inspiring story of Ellen Fuglede, who in the 1970s became the first person in Denmark to preserve an entire estate based on nature’s terms. In Lindelse, we see Lindelse Mill and hear about the mill’s restoration, as well as the island’s many former mills.

Rudkøbing, and the export adventure in Longelse

We’re driving past “Stribefabrikken” in Longelse—a former dairy that is now an export success story—and at the same time hear about the challenges that many small local communities have faced. On the ridge toward Rudkøbing , the tour concludes with the story of the green tripartite agreement and the efforts to give nature more space on an island where agriculture occupies the majority of the land.
